Album of the Week: Eisley – “Room Noises” (2005)

2009/11/02

Track 11: Plenty of Paper:

Eisley

Last week on October 28th, G and I drove hours to see Eisley in Toronto for a meer half hour or so in concert. Where we live is not a good location for touring bands to come to, so we are frequently required to drive a distance to see most bands we wish to see, including Eisley from Texas. It did seem like a lot of effort to see Eisley, who was not the headliner, but it was worth it.

Eisley is not one of the most well known bands. Chauntelle, Sherri, Stacy, and Weston DuPree are all siblings and relatively recent addition to the band, Garron DuPree, is their cousin. They have toured under bands such as Brand New, Snow Patrol and Coldplay, thus adding to their credibility in the industry. I think they are a treasure in the musical world. Their songs contain elements from another world, light and solemn, but not without frolic. It was good to be able to see them perform and get a glimpse of their dynamic and personality. It was a pity they did not have more time, though they were indeed performing while quite ill. One of the sisters on guitar (Chauntelle I think) was unable to sing one of the songs and stopped it within the first measure or two, and was practically hunched over during the last couple songs, closing with “Invasion” from their 2007 album “Combinations”.

They started out in the coffee shop run by their parents, and I am sad to say it would probably have been a better venue accoustically. The Phoenix Theatre in Toronto, though a very cool space for a club/music hall, had attrocious accoustics. The sound was flat and at times I’d swear the band was being drowned out by the talking and ambient sound. Aside from the venue, I also blame the guy on the mixing board who seemed almost lost during the sound check (never promising for the band). They would be much more suited to a venue intended for an orchestra or live theatre.

Regardless I hope Eisley comes to the area again sometime as the headliner. G and I did not stay for Sherri’s husband’s band, “Say Anything”, the headliner (sorry Sherri… they’re just not as good as you guys are). We did however do our regular trip to the Canadian grocery store to pick up the goodies we are unable to purchase in the USA like Ketchup Potato Chips (think Salt & Vingear Potato Chips with a little sweetness and a little tomato flavor… so good!), Coffee Crisp chocolate candy bars, and Kinder Eggs among others. Now that Mexican Coca-Cola is available in the USA, we passed on the Canadian Coca-Cola (both made with real sugar, unlike the high-fructose crap they sell in the USA… Why do we have to go to other countries to buy better Coke when it was invented here? I don’t know.) Oh and of course we stopped at Tim Hortons, not the one in the grocery store we went to or the one in the gas station across the road, no the one on the corner between the two. (Yes, 3 Tim Hortons in sight of each other. Canadian’s love their Tim Hortons!)

I think all you Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, Dixie Chicks, Imogen Heap, and Regina Spektor fans should check out Eisley if you haven’t already. For those of you who like what you hear but do not know whether to start with the first or second album, I am suggesting you start with the first “Room Noises”. It is a little more unique than “Combinations”, and perhaps a little more solid in terms of a musical theme, though I love them both, so feel to get both.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Plenty of Paper” being my favorite. It was difficult to choose the 5 because there is not a song I do not like…

Album of the Week: Danny Elfman – “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993)

2009/10/25

Track 3: This is Halloween:

Disney’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” set a new standard for Halloween songs when it came out, and I am still awaiting a collection of songs to match it. “This Is Halloween” is hard to beat on its own. The soundtrack is jam packed with Halloween imagery and uses tons of musical devices related to the holiday. Many artists have covered various songs from the soundtrack too e.g. Marilyn Manson’s excellent version of “This Is Halloween”:

This album (and movie) are a “must have” in my book. It may just be the pinnacle of Halloween culture in both film and sound. With the Christmas references, it makes an excellent soundtrack and movie all through the months of October and November, and is sure to delight anyone who likes Halloween, young and old alike. It even has a love story wrapped into it, if you’re into the whole Franken-Babe – Dead Guy romance thing.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “This is Halloween” being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Arcade Fire – “Neon Bible” (2007)

2009/10/21

Track 5: Black Wave / Bad Vibrations:

Lately I’ve been listening to Arcade Fire obsessively. It is funny because I didn’t like them at all when I first heard them years ago, but they grew and grew, and now I think of them as a staple. In fact they are so creative I think of them as one of the bands I want to inspire my own music. Each of their songs is so different with minute complexities and unique musical quirks that make them unlike other bands. The story telling nature of their lyrics also sets the bar high for me.

My suggestion you, the masses, is get both this album, “Neon Bible” and Arcade Fire’s first album “Funeral” and listen to them once a month for a year. By the end of that year, I bet you’ll be saying “screw this once a month bullshit, I’m putting it on repeat”!

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Black Wave / Bad Vibrations” being my current favorite (although my favorite seems to be switching from week to week).

Album of the Week: October Project – “October Project” (1993)

2009/10/11

Track 5: Eyes of Mercy:

Audio Stream: http://www.last.fm/music/October+Project/_/Eyes+of+Mercy

octoberproject

October Project is hard to describe. I like to think of October Project as being somewhere between Gothic Rock, Baroque Pop, and Enya. The regular inclusion of a cello also appeals to me, being a fellow cellist. The bellowing vocals of Mary Fahl and Marina Belica seem almost operatic, and so different from the grunge and hip hop that were taking over the airwaves at the time this album hit the local alternative radio station in 1993. October Project was truly something different to me and I still lament that after two albums the group disbanded, reformed later sans album, and then fell into limbo. Though not technically broken up since reforming, they have release only a handful of songs. They are a staple for me in the month of October and probably always will be, ad infinitum.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Eyes of Mercy” being my favorite. I should add there is not a single song I do not like on the album. If you like one, you’ll probably like the whole album!

Album of the Week: Foo Fighters – “The Colour and the Shape” (1997)

2009/10/04

Track 2: Monkey Wrench:

It took me a while to realize I liked the Foo Fighters. As I mentioned before, Guitar Hero 2 really hooked me with “Monkey Wrench”, and I have since expanded my appreciation to several of the Foo Fighter’s albums. I still think that “The Colour and the Shape” is my favorite of them all and the one to have. I love exercising and running to it, working in the garage or the yard to it, basically anything that requires a little adrenaline and energy. The Foo Fighters will get your blood flowing and you will like it!

Here are my 6 favorites from the album, with “Monkey Wrench” being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Metric – “Fantasies” (2009)

2009/09/27

Track 2: Sick Muse:

I got this album in May, a month after the release. I had no exposure to Metric previously, but suddenly left and right my assorted music sites (pandora, amazon, and emusic) were all reccommending this album to me. They were right, so I am passing on the recommendation!

Starting in July I’ve been hooked. I’ve been listening to this album for 3 months and it only seems to have become more addictive to me over that time. Nothing in the music groundbreaking per se. It is solid and full of energy with thoughtful lyrics. Part of the appeal for me could be the 4:4 rock beat that persists through out and is emphasized in song after song. Unlike many bands where the drums are clearly a “backup” to the lead and the guitars, the drums are never pushed out. The vocals, guitars, and drums all share the audio space. The beat is never lost or pushed aside either, reminding me of “The Strokes”.

I’ve been studying the drums so this album has been a companion in my studies. I find myself tapping along where ever I am when ever I listen to them. I’m an ace at playing the steering wheel in my car now. Particularly to the song “Sick Muse”. I know “Help I’m Alive” and “Gimme Sympathy” have received more radio and television air time, but I to me “Sick Muse” is the best of them all. Just this past week I had to hold myself back from posting the song as the song of the day knowing I was just going to post it again today as the album of the week! (Also check out it’s fan made video!)

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Sick Muse” being my favorite.

Album of the Week: The Police – “Synchronicity” (1983)

2009/09/20

Track 7: Every Breath You Take:

One of my brothers use to listen to this album over and over. I can’t say I loved it at first but in the early 1990s I found myself buying the box set of all the albums by “The Police”. This one is by far the best in my mind. Watching all the videos now (see links below), take me back to the 80s watching MTV back when it actually showed music videos, and everyone watched. It was during the reign of Post-Punk and New Wave, two genres that are to be cherished and cultivated in my mind, though they may sicken some of you Heavy Metal Hard Rockers out there. Suck it up. This one rocks!

Album of the Week: Muse – “Black Holes and Revelations” (2006)

2009/09/14

Track 2: Starlight:

A friend of mine handed “Black Holes and Revelations” to me back in 2006 as a gift. It was a couple months before I even listened once. They did not sink in at first. One day while I was painting G’s and my bedroom though it sunk in. I listened to it over and over for hours and hours. I have concluded that Muse is addictive, and particularly good for listening to during long arduous tasks. They keep the blood flowing, and I particularly enjoy “Black Holes and Revelations”. Perhaps you will too?

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Starlight” being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Rodgers and Hammerstein – “The Sound of Music” Soundtrack (1965)

2009/09/06

Track 7: My Favorite Things:

After some deliberation, discussions with friends & family, meditation, singing, dancing, crying, drinking, tomfoolery, etc. … I think it is hard to argue with the evidence that “The Sound of Music” is the best musical of all time, and the 1965 movie in particular. Allow me to enumerate: the “boy” meets “girl” (and doesn’t even know it) story is classic, it is set in historical pre-World War 2 Austria, the singing is top notch with Julie Andrews’ voice, and the songs are all so good and solid that they stand on their own outside of the musical. Many of the songs I actually heard and knew before I watched it when I was young. “The Sound of Music” is also so pervasive and well known due to years of it being in the theaters and then shown on television during the holidays. G and I watched a brief segment of it on TV the other day too and we could’ve just sat and watched the whole thing.

Here are my 5 favorites from the soundtrack, with “My Favorite Things” being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Fiona Apple – “Tidal” (1996)

2009/08/30

Track 7: Never Is a Promise:

For me Fiona Apple’s “Tidal” is an autumnal album. Something about that crisp air, the melancholy of summer and vacation being over, and the sun setting earlier and earlier, reminds me of her innocence lost and despondent lyrics. The feeling is strengthened by the soulful bluesy quality of many of her songs. I find her to be thoughtful and passionate, but without joy in this album. The perfect soundtrack to remembering good times with old friends or old flames who are long gone. Bittersweet.

Although it is still August, it is a cool, crisp, and cloudy autumn day here in my town. The weather is a preview of more to come, and I’ve been holding back on posting any Fiona up until this time when the feeling in the air was right. Like many of my “Must Own Albums” on the list, I am quite content to put this one on repeat and listen to each and every song. It has a level of quality I think Fiona has failed to match since.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Never Is a Promise” being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Ladyhawke – “Ladyhawke” (2008)

2009/08/23

Track 3: My Delirium :

I’ve been consistently listening to this album since I got it in March. I have especially found it to be an excellent album to exercise and run to. I am a sucker for New Wave, and this album reminds me of the New Wave of the 80s over and over. I love it. On top of that, I have found the album to be solid enough that I never skip any of the songs. I would be remiss not to add this one to my “Must Own Albums” list. Ladyhawke (AKA Phillipa Brown from New Zealand) is already working on her next album. I cannot wait.
