Billy Ocean – “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)” (1984)

2009/11/15

Heh heh… I told people I’d post this song. In fact I threatened them. It is all my friends’ fault for singing it over an over last night. So as punishment, I present it to all of you now. It is one of those songs you know all the words to (if you listened to the radio at all in the 80s), but you question if you want to.

Honestly, though I kind of like it now and I do wonder why. It has that familiarity that makes it attractive now, but otherwise I probably would not like it at all. It is kind of like an old acquaintance from high school who you probably didn’t really like all that much in school, but now running into them is kind of nice because you can both talk about the old days. Perhaps now I will like it because I will forever remember my friends singing it poorly over and over? Although I could fill this space with one of countless songs I like more, it is payback time. I need to stick to my word too! Sing on Billy!

Colorblind James Experience – “Considering a Move to Memphis” (1987)

2009/11/14

I’m considering a move to Memphis.

No, not really. I’ve never been to Tennessee actually. Most of the states all around it, but somehow I’ve missed that one.

What I am considering is a move from wordpress.com to somewhere else, probably my own hosted wordpress blog, just not at wordpress.com. I am still researching my options and weighing the pros and cons of moving away from the warm safe but restrictive bosom of wordpress.com. This is all very uncomfortable for me but staying within wordpress.com will not grant me the control I would like to have (ever it would appear). So be it. I must spread my wings and take flight.

This song has been my theme song as I sit here scouring the web for information and “how to’s” on the subject. As part of the move I am also reviewing my registered domain options. The dot-com for MSotD appears to be taken by some proxy registrar. In other words, it might as well not be available, ever. So I may have to go with something else entirely. I may have to give my blog a new name to match too.

As always, I am open to any suggestions you may have on the topic OR any suggestions of what you would like my blog to include too! I am here for myself, but I also want all you peeps out there to be happy campers too with my “song a day” and “album a week” services. As a “DJ” or sorts I will drive the musical bus, but I am am flexible to requests and your thoughts.

PS: Up to this point I have only referred to myself as being in the Northeastern USA, but this song and the band is from my hometown so I’d like to pay tribute to my home town, Rochester, NY, where Chuck Cuminale and his band “Colorblind James Experience” created this song.

Bruce Springsteen – “Dancing in the Dark” (1984)

2009/11/09

Whoa! Hello 1984! This song sparks memories of my youth. Short shorts and big collars on my shirt. Innocence and ignorance I have since lost.

And oh my god does Bruce look young in the video! He is like a baby! And yet in just this past Superbowl XLIII he was sliding across the stage, bumping his crotch into the camera…

… I guess he is just still young at heart.

I was watching when it happened too (the slide into the camera). I felt bad for him because clearly he underestimated how slick the stage was. I thought for sure there’d be another “Nipplegate (RE: Janet Jackson) because Americans are so incredibly stupid about such things, but Bruce’s friends, let’s call them “Big Jim and the Boys”, stayed inside that night, so it was all “ok”. Janet Jackson’s bare breast = OUTRAGE! Over 100 people dying every day in car accidents in the USA = SNORE! Now perhaps if the car accidents were on football fields they’d feel differently?

Danny Elfman – “Main Titles” from Beetlejuice (1988)

2009/10/29

I was querying G what songs she enjoyed for Halloween and she referenced the theme to Beetlejuice. I admitted it was indeed a good choice. Her response was naturally “I’m brilliant.” What can I say?! She is right. It is quite possible most of Danny Elfman’s works would qualify for they mostly have that perky creepiness that oh so appropriate for Halloween!

Ray Parker Jr. – “Ghostbusters” (1984)

2009/10/18

In the 1980s the 1950s were in for a while (e.g. Billy Joel singing Doo Wop. Now the 80s are in. The 80s are the new 50s apparently.

Evidence to this fact is G and I were in Pier 1 Imports and this song came on. Although Halloween-y it seemed so wrong and unexpected for the store. But whatever… I loved it and I was in the store so perhaps it was a brilliant move on some DJ’s part. This song also fits in with my goal to post a Halloween appropriate song every day until Halloween! (And I totally want to watch Ghostbusters now.)

Guns N’ Roses – “Sweet Child O’ Mine” (1987)

2009/10/05

It is funny how so many of the most popular heavy metal songs seem to be a bit on the soft and sweet side of heavy metal. Maybe it is just me.

It is also funny that this song was basically written in five minutes, Slash’s warm up guitar exercise being the creative spark that ignited it, and probably my favorite part of the whole song.

And finally it is funny that I remember trying not to like Guns N’ Roses in school because there was this other kid who was a jerk to everyone, and he liked Guns N’ Roses. I don’t see that guy anymore, so I think the coast is clear.

Dead or Alive – “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” (1985)

2009/09/24

As I recall, G and her best friend played this song a lot years ago. Over and over. There was definitely dancing involved too. Ever since, I immediately think of G when I hear this song, which is surprisingly frequent (the hearing of the song, the thinking of G is frequent w/o the song… he he). Today being G’s day, I wanted to pick a song that is happy & fun, and her’s in my mind.

Album of the Week: The Police – “Synchronicity” (1983)

2009/09/20

Track 7: Every Breath You Take:

One of my brothers use to listen to this album over and over. I can’t say I loved it at first but in the early 1990s I found myself buying the box set of all the albums by “The Police”. This one is by far the best in my mind. Watching all the videos now (see links below), take me back to the 80s watching MTV back when it actually showed music videos, and everyone watched. It was during the reign of Post-Punk and New Wave, two genres that are to be cherished and cultivated in my mind, though they may sicken some of you Heavy Metal Hard Rockers out there. Suck it up. This one rocks!

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “Every Breath You Take” being my favorite.

Mecano – “Hijo de la Luna” (1986)

2009/08/28

Are you an 80s fan? You think you heard it all right? Well I bet most of you do not know this gem of 1980s New Wave/Synthpop from Spain! (Yes the 80s occurred in other countries too!)

If you like the original, operatic pop singer Sarah Brightman did a pretty sweet cover of it in 2000.

Tom Adams – “John Hardy” (1989)

The nice thing about bluegrass music is you can’t tell if it was made yesterday or decades ago. This diddy by Tom Adams is certainly not what most people think of when they hear “80s music”, and I could tell you it came out yesterday and you wouldn’t have a clue, would you? It is just some solid bluegrass, and really that is all that matters. I do like to pull out my bluegrass on occasion, tap my foot, and watch the crazy world go by from my porch.

Erasure – “A Little Respect” (1988)

2009/08/11

I heard this on the radio the other day and I must say the radio has truly been delivering lately. I am totally loving the fact that the 1980s are “IN” right now. Erasure is a must from my ’80s collection. Teens today are totally eating it up. There are more and more 80s influences showing up in new music and the old music is getting a lot more air time. I have even seem more and more mohawks!
