Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Pin” (2003)

2009/08/30

I had to share this one because I love the video for this song. There are very few lyrics to the song, but the video really conveys a full story. It is an excellent analogy between being stuck in a bad relationship and being part of an insect collection. Either way you’re pinned.

The Ting Tings – “Shut Up and Let Me Go” (2008)

2009/06/18

Some of “The Ting Tings” should help get you through the rest of the day! The video is cool… but I feel like I’ve seen something similar somewhere.

The Bravery – “Believe (The Sun Version)” (2007)

2009/06/01

This song in particular caught my ear a couple months ago. The Bravery is still a new band to me though I’ve listened through their album “The Sun and the Moon Complete” several times. It is totally crazy that they produced the album “The Sun and the Moon”, then went are reworked and rerecorded all the same songs with a more electronic feel, while they were touring at the same time. Crazy. Crazy cool too.

Note that I selected the original “Sun Version” of “Believe”. I still cannot figure out if I like The Sun version of the album more or less than “The Moon” version. I guess if you like a song in one, you’ll probably like the other one. Click here to listen to The Moon version of “Believe”.

MGMT – “Kids” (2007)

2009/05/27

Only recently have I realized how much I love this song despite hearing it on the radio for over a year now. It was like an awakening and will result in further exploration of MGMT’s two albums. MGMT is set to release a third album this year too, “Congratulations”. I love that they are an “accidental” sort of band. “We weren’t trying to start a band. We were just hanging out, showing each other music that we liked.”

Just so you know the video is fan-made but perfect for the song. I was totally confused at first because there is a woman in the video, but MGMT is two guys, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. At first I thought maybe one of them was very feminine in face paint or something, until I found the truth.

Update 2009/05/29: This post has immediately become my most viewed in two days. It is understandable because MGMT is so addictive once you have tasted how delicious they are. “Kids”, “Time to Pretend”, and “Electric Feel” are all stuck in my head now, playing on repeat like a radio station with only three songs. MGMT is so addictive I had to hunt down their demo album “Climbing to New Lows” which is not for sale but was leaked on the Internet, and I found a link to it here, and it is FREE though who knows for how long.

UPDATE 2009-06-14:

Apparently MGMT has made an “official” video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R53bXHMSkk) and it probably took a lot more effort, time and money to produce, but it just isn’t as good as the fan made one that is so popular. Sorry MGMT! Stick to the music. Maybe you could do as M83 did and run a contest on YouTube!

Cut Copy – “Feel The Love” (2008)

2009/05/20

This band from Australia is definitely one to watch …er… listen to. I heard a 10 second clip a couple months ago and said to myself “wait a minute… what was THAT?” It was from this song and I now have both their albums. I’m not sure if this is my favorite song or not. The albums are still “sinking in” for me.

As I was telling my compadre at
‘Me, And All My Friends’s’ on his “best so far of 2009″ post, “if you like Cut Copy, I’d suggest checking out
Ladyhawke and perhaps Ladytron if you haven’t already… Daft Punk too? New Order’s – “Crystal” perhaps?” I think perhaps I should’ve added “Hey Champ” to the list too!

In fact the more I think about it, the more I think they are like the love child of New Order and Daft Punk. House and New Wave lovers unite! (…which is funny because Wikipedia doesn’t have them as either New Wave or House. Electropop and Dance-Punk it is then.)

Album of the Week: Franz Ferdinand – “Tonight” (2009)

2009/05/12

Track 1: Ulysses:

I bought this album by the Scottish band Franz Ferdinand shortly after it first came out. (Yes, they are named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination eventually led to World War I.)For the past two months I’ve been listening to it constantly and obsessively in the car especially. It is so energetic, fun, and guaranteed to get you singing and dancing. There is a purposefully rough suaveness to the lyrics and music I only wish I could embody.

Some mornings I feel like my “song of the day” is a farce because half the time it seems one of these songs is really the song stuck in my head. I could hold it in no longer. Although this album has not stood up to the test of time (yet) I think it needs to be my Album of the Week and is definitely a Must Own Album.

To quote myself from my post on Ulysses (which is weird I know): “I have been loving the whole album since I bought it the day after it came out (1/27). This is quite possibly the most exciting song (“Ulysses”) and album I’ve heard from 2009 so far. So, unless you have a heart condition (no seriously, there should be a warning on it, it is that good!), stop what you are doing, and turn up the volume and push play!”

I am kicking myself because I missed them on their North American tour. Next time.

Here are my favorites from the album, with “Ulysses” being my favorite:

Track 1: Ulysses

Track 2: Turn It On

Track 3: No You Girls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoewjKHanA8

Track 7: What She Came For
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmSwhYD18DE

Track 8: Live Alone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S248nLr0cuE

Track 9: Can’t Stop Feeling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3Yv2Juq4gI

Track 10: Lucid Dreams (New Album Version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl98kUWgQrc

It was tough to pick the 5… so for this post I decided 7 was the new 5. (My blog. My rules.) The album is too good. Oh and make sure you check out the 2nd part of “Lucid Dreams” (starting at 4:45) where they are electro jamming! It has a nice sharp industrial new wave fusion kind of sound to it. Too cool.

Hey Champ – “Cold Dust Girl” (2008)

2009/05/10

As part of our “Rock and Roll Vacation” to Cleveland, G and I saw “The Sounds” with opening band “Hey Champ” at The Grog Shop. We were over by the drummer (to my delight because I’ve taken up the drums) and I was blown away. I’m still a beginner and easily impressed, but of all the drummers I’ve seen live since I started, Jon Marks has impressed me the most. Today’s song of the day really does not do his ability justice either. Watch this clip on YouTube and judge for yourself (note I think some of the better stuff in the clip starts near the middle):

He reminds me the drums are an instrument and not just there to keep the beat. I’ve never seen a drummer with so much presence as Jon had. The three of them really have something unique because of it too. I’ll be waiting and watching for an LP from these guys (they don’t have one yet)!

PS: From what I can tell the only way to get your hands on an EP is to go to a show and buy it from them (which I stupidly did not do when I saw them). You might be able to find random songs here and there on the internet. Or just listen to what they have available on their “Hey Champ” MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/heychamp

Of all all their recorded work I’ve listened to over the past couple days, I think today’s song of the day is the best. No wonder it was stuck in my head as I awoke.

Franz Ferdinand – “Ulysses” (2009)

2009/04/16

I said it when this was my song of the day on 3/9 and it is still true today… This song is HOT!

In fact I have been loving the whole album since I bought it the day after it came out (1/27). This is quite possibly the most exciting song and album I’ve heard from 2009 so far. So, unless you have a heart condition (no seriously, there should be a warning on it, it is that good!), stop what you are doing, and turn up the volume and push play!
