While searching for songs that fall into my “Zombie Rock” genre, I came across Midnight Juggernauts. I’m not sure they quite fit that genre. Close but no cigar. The voice distortion and repetition are there but the dissonance is not quite there. The desire to eat brains is not quite there either. However I could see them totally rocking a dance floor. They do seem heavily influenced by Daft Punk too if I had to guess, and I do love Daft Punk. Go Australia for the rocking electropop scene!
I’m a boy, so I’m not usually all hot and bothered by vampires, the way many ladies I know tend to be (e.g. the “Twilight” phenomenon where every woman nation apparently became brainwashed into thinking bad literature and film is “good” when you rub some vampires on it, G included). I have always liked this song though and thought it to poses that sexy imperilment that makes vampire myth so popular. The draw of danger and vulnerability makes vampires perfect for Halloween too.
This song makes me happy. Perhaps because it is so peppy and fun. Perhaps because it reminds me of when G and I moved into our first apartment together.
Freezepop is well named. They are totally frivolous electric pop. Even the band members describe their music as “sweet and cold and fruity and plastic-y”. Indeed they are like the tasty treat they are named after. You either love them or you hate them. I think both are delicious but in large quantities your teeth or ears may ache!
Are you an 80s fan? You think you heard it all right? Well I bet most of you do not know this gem of 1980s New Wave/Synthpop from Spain! (Yes the 80s occurred in other countries too!)
If you like the original, operatic pop singer Sarah Brightman did a pretty sweet cover of it in 2000.
I’ve been consistently listening to this album since I got it in March. I have especially found it to be an excellent album to exercise and run to. I am a sucker for New Wave, and this album reminds me of the New Wave of the 80s over and over. I love it. On top of that, I have found the album to be solid enough that I never skip any of the songs. I would be remiss not to add this one to my “Must Own Albums” list. Ladyhawke (AKA Phillipa Brown from New Zealand) is already working on her next album. I cannot wait.
Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with “My Delirium” being my favorite.
I heard this on the radio the other day and I must say the radio has truly been delivering lately. I am totally loving the fact that the 1980s are “IN” right now. Erasure is a must from my ’80s collection. Teens today are totally eating it up. There are more and more 80s influences showing up in new music and the old music is getting a lot more air time. I have even seem more and more mohawks!
In support of my brother, I drove into the city and marched in a Gay Pride Parade recently. It was a lot of fun. The one part that surprised me was when we reached the protesters. In this case they were all “bible thumpers” with big signs and mega phones telling us how evil we are, how we’re going to hell, how much smiting and burning for all eternity we should expect, and all that good stuff. At the time I just hooted and hollered over their spew, and passed them, waving my little rainbow colored flag in their faces, but let me go a bit further now.
For starters, I have two words for these bigots, as expressed in today’s song by Lily Allen…
Many may believe the translators were “blessed” and thus the interpretations are perfect and free from error. But even for those who subscribe to the most extreme statements, like the ones in Leviticus 20:13 (New International Version of the bible) “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”, I would have to argue that you are cherry picking. A few lines before it, the bible also says in Leviticus 20:9 “If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and his blood will be on his own head.” Meaning cursing your parents is equal a sin to being a homosexual. And not long before that it says in 19:19 “Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.”, meaning cotton-polyester blends are also sinful. List out all (or even a handful) of the assorted laws and sins from the bible and collectively this list appears to be ridiculous.
Oh but there is more…
I have not fully expressed my anger at the closed minded protesters and those who agree with them. So I must question, are Christians good? Are believers and followers of god good? If you believe in the bible, the “word of god”, perhaps you should watch this video reviewing some portions of the bible where god commits or condones Rape, Slavery, Torture, Child Abuse, Animal and Human Sacrifice, Murder, Genocide, Stealing, and Lying, thus questioning if god is actually good. Perhaps god is evil?
Part 1:
Part 2:
Perhaps I should be protesting outside of churches every Sunday? I’m not that kind of asshole though. However I do like to wonder “why is faith in god good”? I have yet to hear a good solid answer from anyone. If you have one, please, bring it on!
Fortunately G was not with my brother and I during the parade or else she would’ve been throwing things at the protesters and then we would’ve been arrested. (The police were out in force.) It is easy to say people like the protesters do not deserve our time and energy, and they should just be ignored, but they and their ilk have convinced entire states to do bad things like make laws that actually prevent equality, and perpetuate hatred, fear and bigotry… and THAT IS EVIL! (If the laws of the bible become actual law, then I’ll have to be put to death for buying cotton-polyester blend shirts!) They must be countered and called out for the evil ones they are.
As Lily Allen put it…
So you say
It’s not okay to be gay
Well I think you’re just evil
You’re just some racist who can’t tie my laces
Your point of view is midieval
Fuck you
Fuck you very, very much
Cause we hate what you do
And we hate your whole crew
So please don’t stay in touch
I am a sucker for one hit wonders from the 80’s. I know you true fans out there would say “but wait, they had 6 albums”. Sure sure. It is all about “I Ran”.
I think the hair was a brilliant idea too because I frequently hear “flock of seagulls” whenever someone is having a bad hair day or something, and everytime, this song comes to mind. The name recognition is huge!
I kept hearing this song on the radio, for like a year now (though it has been out for three). I love it every time I hear it but they never said who it was afterwards. Today I was thinking about it and I decided to search until I found it. Fortunately it didn’t take too long.
I love the opening bit in the video where she is looking for a blend of half the genres out there. I feel that way all the time. I believe the real musical story of the past decade has been a lot more about fusion of different styles and genres than it has been about the creation of truly unique ones. Have we collectively reached a creative barrier? Perhaps, but doubtful. I think it is more likely that we just want to be able to listen to our entire music collection at once.
This band from Australia is definitely one to watch …er… listen to. I heard a 10 second clip a couple months ago and said to myself “wait a minute… what was THAT?” It was from this song and I now have both their albums. I’m not sure if this is my favorite song or not. The albums are still “sinking in” for me.
In fact the more I think about it, the more I think they are like the love child of New Order and Daft Punk. House and New Wave lovers unite! (…which is funny because Wikipedia doesn’t have them as either New Wave or House. Electropop and Dance-Punk it is then.)
This is far from my favorite Depeche Mode song, but this is the one stuck in my head all morning. Thus it gets to be the song of the day. Don’t get me wrong, I like this song, I just like songs off of “Violator” and “Songs of Faith and Devotion” a lot more.
