Megadeth – “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due” (1990)

2009/10/12

Heavy Metal is not my default. I tend not to listen to it with regularity. But sometimes I just get in a mood… like an itch, and all that will satisfy it is some metal. Today’s back scratcher is Megadeth. Some awesome speed metal passages and guitar riffs!

Guns N’ Roses – “Sweet Child O’ Mine” (1987)

2009/10/05

It is funny how so many of the most popular heavy metal songs seem to be a bit on the soft and sweet side of heavy metal. Maybe it is just me.

It is also funny that this song was basically written in five minutes, Slash’s warm up guitar exercise being the creative spark that ignited it, and probably my favorite part of the whole song.

And finally it is funny that I remember trying not to like Guns N’ Roses in school because there was this other kid who was a jerk to everyone, and he liked Guns N’ Roses. I don’t see that guy anymore, so I think the coast is clear.

Van Halen – “Right Now” (1991)

2009/09/20

G reminded me of this song and video a few weeks ago. All the little bits of images and text in the video are mesmerizing. Whether it is the political or personal bits that pull at your heart strings, the video is bound to get you thinking about something you care about. For me it is frequently “Opportunity is passing you by.” Here they all are:

Right now,
- Ed is playing the piano.
- People are having unprotected sex.
- Opportunity is passing you by.
- Justice is being perverted in a court of law.
- Blacks and whites don’t eat together very much.
- You could be outside.
- The light from a star in M-5 is heading toward earth, right now, light that left M-5 a thousand years ago is getting to your house.
- God is killing moms and dogs because he has to.
- Guilt is turning someone inside out.
- VanHalen is planning a world tour.
- There’s a bomb factory hard at work.
- You are sitting to close.
- Somebody’s got the wrong idea
- Oil companies and old men are in control.
- It’s business as usual in the woods.
- Nothing is more expensive than regret.
- People who can’t breathe are bumming.
- Is just a space between ice ages.
- Youth is king.
- Maybe we should pay attention to the lyrics.
[lyrics:
Miss a beat, you lose a rhythm
An nothin' falls into place. No!
Only missed by a fraction
Slipped a little off your pace. Oh!]
- Is a good time to repent.
- The truth is being obscured.
- Science is building a better tomato.
- Pigs are becoming lunch.
- Someone is working too hard for minimum wage.
- A convenience store is open.
- Mike is thinking about a solo project.
- Your parents miss you.
- Oysters are being robbed of their sole possession.
- No one is safe from loneliness.
- It is cold where someone you love is.
- It’s nicer in Cabo.
- A mad man is wandering the streets of the town you live in.
- A tired man with a wounded heart is sitting in a coach seat on a east-bound transatlantic flight looking out the window wondering how to say “dog”, “howl” and “moon” in French in case it comes up.
- She is going on with her life.
- Time is having its way with you.
- Forces are aligning against you.
- Someone is walking onto a nude beach for the first time.
- Ed’s got his hands full.
- You wish you had a larger tv.
- Write NOW!
- Our government is doing things we think only other countries do.
- You aren’t doing what you most wish you were.
- Is harder than it looks.
- Your memory is getting longer while your life is getting shorter.
- Dogs have it good.
- Is not the fault of the Japanese.
- There is no cure.
- People are doing it for money.
- A bowl of soup would be nice.
- Keeps happening.
- We must be going.

Black Sabbath – “Paranoid” (1970)

2009/09/01

I have not been sleeping well the past few nights. Insomnia sucks. If you’ve ever seen “Fight Club”, insomnia is a lot like it is described in the beginning. “When you have insomnia, you’re never really asleep… and you’re never really awake.” You end up living life like a zombie the next day and ever onward until you do finally get a full night of sleep. Stupid sleep.

Usually insomnia is an indicator of something wrong either physically or mentally. I have some ideas what my problem may be. Without getting into specifics, perhaps Black Sabbath has expressed my problem?

I need someone to show me the things in life that I cant find
I cant see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind

Or perhaps it is because my Heavy Metal cred was questioned the other day? Though it is true, I know less about heavy metal and classic rock than I do about new wave, electropop and post-punk, I like and listen to bands like Black Sabbath when I am in the mood. I am just not in the mood that often I guess.

Blue Öyster Cult – “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” (1976)

2009/08/19

I cannot hear this song without thinking of that episode in Supernatural with the grim reaper and also this infamous Saturday Night Live skit with Christopher Walken and Will Ferrel:

Rush – “YYZ” (1981)

2009/06/17

This song is too cool. It is packed with awesome riffs. It appeals to the geek in me too because YYZ in Morse Code ( - . - -   - . - -   - - . . ) is played over and over in the song.

The fan made video is pretty awesome too. I wish I could drum half as well or had half as many toms and crash cymbals. (I just have the standard 3 toms, 1 bass, 1 snare, 1 high hat and 1 ride cymbal.)

Def Leppard – “Pour Some Sugar On Me” (1987)

2009/06/14

To paraphrase what G said to me as she made me watch the video…

  • At the start you’re saying to yourself “This is just some dumb 80’s rock. Well maybe I’ll listen a little bit more.”
  • By about 25 seconds in you’re thinkng “Hey I know this song. Maybe it isn’t so dumb.”
  • By 50 seconds in you are thinking “This song is alright.” You’re liking it.
  • At the 1 minute 28 seconds, you break out in song. You love it and you know it!

So true. So true.

Rock on!

Metallica – “Enter Sandman” (1991)

2009/05/14

Perhaps it is the ominous dark sky and winds this morning that caused this song to pop into my head.

I don’t know a single heavy metal fan who does not like Metallica. “Enter Sandman” is classic too. So if you are not a listener of heavy metal, consider this a litmus test for whether you ever could be or not.

AC/DC – “Back in Black” (1980)

2009/04/15

I grew up with one of my brothers listening to AC/DC and this song “Back in Black” seems to appear all over the place. It is a song that seems to be frequently and randomly playing in the soundtrack of my life. My life must be using Winamp to shuffle. Oh I kid Winamp!

This song also makes me think maybe I should quit the day job, hunt ghosts, drive around in my black ‘67 Chevy Impala, and change my name to Dean… maybe date a Gilmore Girl or something while I’m at it, or that Lana Lang chick. Sounds good to me. I’m sure G won’t mind.

UPDATE 2009-06-07:

I get a ton of hits on this post because of searches for “67 Impala”. Click here for a link to more information on the 67 Impala, because I don’t really know much. I know the shape was influenced by the Classic Coke Bottle. They look cool though and G wants to tour the US in one.

Also I must say it is a crime against humanity when you take a cool car that looks like this:

1967 Chevrolet Impala

1967 Chevrolet Impala

…and you turn it into a car that looks like this:

2009 Chevrolet Impala

2009 Chevrolet Impala

What the hell!!! Seriously?! It is no wonder GM has gone bankrupt! They took every cool car they use to make and turned them into bubble cars. Blech!

Led Zeppelin – “Kashmir” (1975)

2009/04/03

Today’s bonus song of the day, was actually my song of the day on March 21st. Sometimes I just get in a mood and I want to play some Led Zeppelin. I’m sure you feel the same way. I love the persistent slow march like beat. And then the orchestral quality to the keyboards at times, like a viola is actually drawing a bow back and forth across the strings. And then a touch of Indian or Middle Eastern sound. The combo is so cool.
