People Under the Stairs – “Plunken’Em” (2003)

2009/08/22

I’ve been listening to People Under the Stairs for years, but I don’t know of ANYONE else who has even heard of them. I found them online, and now I have most of their albums. Their rap is so rhythmic and chill at the same time. It isn’t over the top, it is just solid, track after track, like this song.

Dido – “Thank You” (1999) & Eminem – “Stan” (2000)

2009/08/21

How cool it would be if Eminem and Dido did a whole album or set of songs collaboratively? I thought “Stan” was brilliant. Dido’s “Thank You” and Eminem’s “Stan” are really one song to me, hence the “double” song of the day. It just did not seem right to separate them at all. So here is the other half (Eminem’s “Stan”):

LL Cool J – “Mama Said Knock You Out” (1990)

2009/08/09

This song may be tame by today’s standards, but still solid as when I first heard it. This was the song stuck in my head as I awoke. I was bleary eyed, dehydrated, and uncoordinated as I took my first not-awake-yet steps, but something in me must be ready for a fight. Listening to it does pump me up a bit.

Movits! – “Fel Del Av Gården” (2008)

2009/08/04

Hats off to my friend LK for sending me a couple links to Movits! yesterday. From what I have gathered online, these guys are hot! Ever since appearing on The Colbert Report on 2009-7-27, Movits! has gotten a lot of attention from the American audiences.

Check out the interview: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/239946/july-27-2009/movits-

Check out their performance too: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/239947/july-27-2009/movits—-fel-del-av-garden

Between bands like The Knife, The Sounds, and Movits! I am inclined to think some of the most creative and interesting music is coming out of Sweden.

House Of Pain – “Jump Around” (1992)

2009/07/27

Once upon a time you could not go to a party without this song blaring. Imagine, if you will, a whole house full of people jumping all at the same time as the house threatens to give up and break under the stress. Ah the good old days, before this song was designated for brief air play as filler to rouse a crowd e.g. at sporting events. Anything played at such events makes it seem tame or even lame, but before we play it at little Billy’s 3rd birthday party, let’s review some lyrics…

Cause I got lyrics and you ain’t got none
So if you come to battle bring a shotgun

I gots the skill, come get your fill
Cause when I shoot ta give, I shoot to kill

Try’n to play me out like as if my name was Sega
But I ain’t going out like no punk bitch

Now Billy, remember, it is not nice to call Grandma a “Punk Bitch”!

Destiny’s Child – “So Good” (1999)

2009/07/01

I was having a bad bad week, but things were looking up before work today. I prepared this post ahead of time and jinxed myself apparently. So many problems. Not enough time to fix them all. Instead of this bonus song being representative of how I feel, it is more how I wish I could feel again. *sigh*

I just know today is going to be a bad day at work. Actually the way it has gone so far, the whole week is shaping up to be bad. So here is some DMX to psych me up for it.

OutKast – “Hey Ya!” (2003)

2009/06/29

OutKast is too much fun. Some of the lines are too cool. “Lend me some sugar, I AM YOUR NEIGHBOR!”

I cannot remember if it was G or me who recognized it first, but the real hook in this song, the real genius, is the extra 2 beats. There are 20 beats in each set of measures, and then there are 2 extra beats making the last measure half as long. Over and over. Gives it a subtle funky syncopation that you’re addicted to before you realize what you’re addicted to.

PS: I put all my album cover images in a directory and seeing them all together looked cool. I used a little collage making program so you might see what I mean, including all the album covers I’ve posted so far. If viewing a sea of albums you know and love all together does not make you happy, then are you really a music lover? I know it makes me happy.

P.M. Dawn – “Reality Use To Be A Friend Of Mine” (1991)

2009/06/10

Apparently I am still in a Hip Hop mood this morning. I always thought P.M. Dawn was so clever because he seems to be in the gray area between spoken word and singing. He is like barely rapping and barely singing most of the time. Unlike a lot of newer hip hop, his back music is almost enough to stand on its own too. It is thick, and I like a nice thick song with a gazillion instruments, singers, etc. No wonder I’m a fan of “mashups”.

Bit of trivial for you, P.M. Dawn was formed by Attrell Cordes and Jarrett Cordes, and were raised by their mom and George Brown of “Kool & the Gang”. (“Jungle Boogie” anyone?

Eminem – “Superman” (2002)

2009/06/09

I love this bonus song of the day because instead of the more typical male-female dynamic portrayed in rap songs, like Big Pimp’, Eminem is calling out manipulative women, likely from his own personal experience.

I am cracking up too. They changed the line “bitches, they come they go” to “chickens, they come they go”. Meanwhile, the bare breast shots of Gina Lynn (oh and also what is presumably Eminem mooning her) are OK! So silly.

I am also cracking up because I just told a few of my co-workers about this site, and now, today, I’m posting songs and videos that fall under the “not safe for work” category. G always says I’m a troublemaker. My only response is “yup”!

Jay-Z – “Big Pimpin’” (1999)

I have no idea what drew me to Jay-Z this morning. Perhaps I’d rather be Big Pimpin’ instead of getting ready for work. This is one of my favorites from Jay-Z for sure.
